Our History
Amarante’s Sea Cliff boasts a colorful 100-year history. As far back as the Roaring ’20s, beachgoers would ride the trolley to the picturesque Sea Cliff, while others would arrive by personal limousine. They all came to party, dance to Big Band music, and were even known to frequent the Speakeasy located on the second floor of The Inn.
Its current story starts with Andy “Sonny” Amarante. After serving in the U. S. Navy in World War II, Sonny attended the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, graduating in 1948. He began working in the restaurant business in 1950 at Andy’s Luncheonette in New Haven, moving to San Remo’s Restaurant in 1959.
In 1962, Sonny purchased Sea Cliff, introducing the art of fine dining to the New Haven shoreline. Every offering and event featured his unique design and flair, which made Amarante’s Sea Cliff the premier waterfront catering facility in Connecticut. In the 1980s, he created and produced Connecticut’s first dinner theater, which hosted tens of thousands of show-loving diners.
When you enter Amarante’s Sea Cliff today, stop and listen closely. You might just hear the faint strains of Charleston dance music or Don Quixote singing “The Impossible Dream.”
Sonny’s legacy lives on now, in every event we host, every tasty bite of food we serve, and every memory we help create.
