The History of Morris Cove

A neighborhood where nearly 400 years of history meets Connecticut's beautiful shoreline.

Morris Cove • New Haven, Connecticut

Some places have history.

Morris Cove has generations of stories.

A Neighborhood Built on Tradition

New Haven is known for many things. From the energy of downtown to the quiet waterfront neighborhoods of the East Shore, there is something for everyone.

Nestled along Long Island Sound, Morris Cove is a neighborhood rich in history, scenic views, and community tradition. For nearly 400 years, this shoreline has brought people together.

English colonists established New Haven in 1638 on land inhabited by the Quinnipiac people. Thomas Morris later established his family’s homestead along the shoreline. Over time, the quiet farming community grew into one of Connecticut’s most beloved waterfront destinations.

The Pardee-Morris House

If you have driven down Lighthouse Road on your way to Amarante’s, you may have passed one of Morris Cove’s greatest treasures.

The historic Pardee-Morris House was rebuilt during the 1780s after the British raid on New Haven. Today, it stands as a reminder of the neighborhood’s remarkable past and the generations that helped shape it.

The Trolley Era

As New Haven expanded during the late 1800s, Morris Cove grew with it. Trolley service connected local residents with Lighthouse Point, making the shoreline easier to reach.

Soon, families were traveling to the Cove to enjoy the ocean breeze, beaches, restaurants, and other coastal attractions. Morris Cove became a popular summer destination.

Visitors did not come only because it was nearby. They were drawn to the waterfront, the slower pace, and the feeling of leaving the rest of the world behind.

Honestly, not much has changed.

Today, guests visit Morris Cove for many of the same reasons. Some come to watch the sunset over Long Island Sound. Others celebrate life’s greatest milestones or simply enjoy an evening by the water.

Amarante’s Sea Cliff Joins the Story

That welcoming spirit is what Andy Amarante saw when he discovered this special stretch of shoreline in 1957.

Five years later, he purchased the property. His vision was to create a place where people could gather, celebrate, and make lasting memories.

More than 60 years later, that vision remains alive.
